. >> part of it is hurricane sandy and part of it's the tragedy from newtown, connecticut. david: people are afraid to go out and shop? >> they're not in the mood. one quote in an article talk people think it's better to spend time with family. shopper tracker is finding that people shopping for the week that ended december 15th down 4.3%. overall they've adjusted what they think the holiday seen will be. and they've adjusted that it will be a growth of 2.5%. and thought it would be 3.3%. national retail federation is keeping their prediction of growth 4.1%. real quick, i don't know if we have the graphic available. if you invest in retailer, boy have the on-line retailers done gang busters and even the shopper track survey even on-line wasn't performing as well as last year. overall this year for shopping, the on-line stock is doing much better. >> meanwhile, j.c. penney can we put up the stock chart, intraday what it's doing? it's up almost # 4% today. does that surprise you? >> the brick and mortar retailers are up for the year. the on-line retailer, theirs is up. and once again, amaz

, the fiscal cliff, newtown, connecticut, what happened up there, that's the gem feeling overall. jcpenney, they've had promotions walking away from it every day, low discount price story. oppenheimer noted discount racks had been cleared and the traffic seems to have improved in that store. maybe that change in their philosophy has helped them out. that's a note that was out on oppenheimer today. bottom line here, guys, is i think we are seeing some movement with some companies to deal with some of these retail sales issues. you'll see a lot of pressure on margins. david, i think you mentioned this, about what was going on with inflows and outflows from equity mutual funds. it's true we're continuing to get outflows from equity mutual funds. that's certainly been disappointing. we had it going through up until last week. the end of last week, it was reported the first outflows from treasuries. more specifically, from general bond funds. that's the first time we've seen this in a very, very long time. all right, it was a very small number, something on the order of $1 billion or something

up on me this year with sandy and everything that went on here in the northeast and then the newtown, connecticut tragedy, all of a sudden i found that christmas. yesterday i went and visited a parishioner in the hospital who is dying, 80 years old, very good man of the i knew he was dying. but somebody had taught me along the way that when you're leaving the hospital as a priest, a tradition that i started through his example, i just said, is there anybody -- i asked the nursed, is there anybody who doesn't have any family that i could visit? because as a clergy member, they allow know do it. they said, well, there is someone, but he's not doing well. i said, well, take me to see him. and these two nurses, nervously walked me over. as soon as he saw us from above, he started getting very angry, tahj tated. he started beating on his bed. he was lying there obviously dying. about 45 years old, of a terrible disease. and they said, father, let's get out of here. we can't handle this. i said, let me stay a little bit longer. i took one step closer and he started getting furious. they sa
